Medication Philosophy
At Renova Psychiatry, medication is viewed as a powerful tool—but not the only tool, and not always the first one.
We believe psychiatric medications can be life-changing when used thoughtfully, but they are most effective when integrated into a broader understanding of the nervous system, sleep, stress, habits, and life context. Rather than reacting quickly to symptoms or layering medications indiscriminately, we prioritize clarity, sequencing, and long-term stability.
Our approach emphasizes:
Using medication when there is clear clinical indication
Starting with the lowest effective dose whenever possible
Making fewer, more intentional changes rather than frequent adjustments
Avoiding unnecessary polypharmacy when simpler approaches are effective
Regularly reassessing whether each medication is still serving the patient’s goals and functioning
Medication decisions are made collaboratively, with attention to both benefits and tradeoffs. Some patients benefit from long-term medication, while others may gradually reduce or simplify treatment over time when clinically appropriate.
The goal is not to eliminate medication or to rely on it excessively, but to use it wisely—supporting nervous system stability, functional improvement, and sustainable mental health over the long term.
Regarding Controlled Medications
At Renova Psychiatry, some medications—such as stimulants, benzodiazepines, and sedative sleep agents—are used thoughtfully and with particular care. These medications can be helpful in certain situations, but they can also influence nervous system regulation in complex ways over time.
When appropriate, we may recommend adjusting, simplifying, or gradually reducing certain medications if they appear to be contributing to instability, side effects, or diminished functioning. This is never done abruptly or without careful discussion. Decisions are individualized and collaborative, guided by safety, clinical evidence, and each patient’s goals.
Not every patient will need changes to their current medications. However, Renova prioritizes long-term nervous system stability and functional health over short-term symptom suppression alone.
